Corvette5What is it that makes some people so angry?  About nothing.  The other day I was on my way to the clinic about 6:30 in the morning.  I had just made a right turn onto Main Street in Cedar Falls, and saw a black Corvette about a block ahead.  After a block or two, the driver suddenly slowed, swerved into the other lane, and dropped back so that he was following me for awhile. Soon, he raced by, but was quickly stopped by a red light.

Now I’ve admired Corvettes since high school, so when I pulled up next to him, I looked over, waved, and called out, “nice car.”  A guy who looked like he’d stepped right out of “Deliverance” gave me a dirty look, nodded toward my beloved Miata, revved his engine a little, and snarled “Them cars are a piece of shit.  My old lady had one.  I made her sell it.”

Several sophisticated answers went through my mind.   Like, “###k you and the horse you rode in on.”  Or maybe “Next time you get your oil changed, have them do your hair too.”  And there’s always, “Any woman who’d have anything to do with you couldn’t….”   Okay, I admit, every appropriate retort would have reflected badly on my character.  So, naturally, I just sat there with my mouth hanging open, wondering, “Have you got a gun in there?”  A moment later the light changed, and he showed me who had the more powerful car. The sound of his automatic transmission flowing through the gears wasn’t that impressive, but he had chirped the tires well.

A few blocks later he made a right turn and headed off to his own private hell, leaving me wondering, “Does your life suck that bad?”  Because I haven’t heard that kind of unprovoked anger since 8th grade.  But more important, do you suppose he might really carry a gun in there?
