THE NEW INQUISITION: BOYCOTT THE BASTARDS

I’m getting awfully tired of directives to boycott people who don’t rise to my level of sainthood.  Is it a God given right to take away the livelihood of those we disagree with?   And when did it become okay to bully anybody who annoys us?

The thirteenth century inquisition tried cases of heresy in the church and turned over the “guilty” to civil authorities for punishment… sometimes execution.  Today, if we find someone guilty of bigotry, we don’t torture or execute them. We attempt to organize boycotts and punish them economically.  A little more civilized, I’ll admit, but maybe not as much as you think.  The next time some holier-than-thou bully wants you to boycott Nestle, Starbucks, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or even the Salvation Army, for some exceedingly worthy cause, refuse.  Just walk away.

boycott5I recently read a story claiming that Chip and Joanna Gaines are a danger to all right thinking christians.   Very possibly, they believe that marriage should only be allowed between a man and a woman.  No same sex marriage.

Now, if you don’t recognize their names, don’t worry.  Lots of people don’t know them.  Chip and Joanna have a television show on the Home and Garden Network, apparently a very popular one, called Fixer Upper.  The couple got caught up in the downside of making your living in such a public way.  People think their opinions are newsworthy.

According to the story, the Gaines family attends a church led by Jimmy Seibert, a very popular, outspoken pastor of one of those Texas mega churches.  Seibert preaches what he considers the very biblical morality of same sex marriages.  He’s also very open about his belief that he can convert people from what he calls “their sexual lifestyle.”

So far, so good.  Certainly,  Seibert has a right to be wrong.  I don’t agree with him, and you might not either.  Or maybe you do.  Doesn’t matter, and that’s just the point.  We abandoned the practice of inquisition 800 years ago.  As long as he’s not actually harming anybody, he can preach pretty much anything he wants.  If his parishioners disagree, they have every right to attend a different church with beliefs more in line with their own.

So far, Chip and Joanna Gaines have refused to confirm or deny any speculation about their own beliefs.  The result has been an online push for HGTV to fire them.  And if HGTV won’t do their biding, the morality bullies are calling for a boycott of the television network.

boycott8If I’m remembering correctly, it hasn’t been more than about six months since the American Family Association called for a boycott of Target stores over their policy of encouraging customers to use the restroom or changing room that corresponded with their gender identity.  In other words, if you are walking around as a man, use the men’s restroom.  If you seem to be a woman, use the women’s restroom.  Target weathered the storm and doesn’t need my help, but that’s not the end of it.

A few days ago, Kellogg stopped advertising on Breitbart.com because of what they described as bigoted content.  Breitbart immediately called for a boycott of Kellogg products.

Last July people were calling for a boycott of Samsung. The company was falsely accused of manufacturing a machine that could be used to torture live dogs.  I know.  I know.  How ridiculous can users of the internet get?  Apparently, pretty far out.

boycott7For instance, Donald Trump supporters in Tacoma, Washington, called for a boycott of the local Outback Steakhouse after a Trump supporter claimed to have been refused service.

Not to be outdone, Trump tweeted “Boycott all Apple products until such time as Apple gives cellphone info to authorities regarding radical Islamic terrorist couple from Cal.”

“Truthfeed,” a highly suspicious internet “news” source, published an article saying  “In a stunningly rude and inappropriate ad, smug cruise line Celebrity snubs their snooty noses at Trump and his supporters.  We are calling on all Trump supporters to not only BOYCOTT Celebrity but let your voices be heard.”

Really?  Is most everybody getting boycotted?

Nestle?  √

Starbucks?  √

Kentucky Fried Chicken?  √

Even the Salvation Army? √

boycott1 I am totally underwhelmed at the moral imperative.  And, no, not a one of these boycotts made the world a better place.

[ At the last minute I’m reading something about how the management of Mall of America has committed the unpardonable sin of hiring a black Santa Claus.  According to reports, a movement to boycott the mall has already begun. Just rumors?  We’ll have to wait for the story from Truthfeed.]

  1. HGTV has a massive gay audience. The Gaines s don’t get to have it both ways. They have had pleny of opportunity to separate teir views form their churches. They have not. Their viewers have to make their own choices. I wont watch anymore. Perhaps the Gaines should broadcast their pathetic folksy crap of a show on the CHristian broadcast network.
